On arriving in France this weekend, president Trump
published a tweet criticizing president
Macron who suggested that « Europe built its own military in order to
protect itself from the U.S., China and Russia ».
How awkward was this suggestion ? Do you believe that there
could be a need for military force against the USA one day?
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Europe will need to protect itself from the USA militarily, as Western Europe and the USA have been allies since the end of World War 2 and most of european countries have joined NATO, along with the USA.
I think the greatest threat to Europe that comes from the USA is not a military one, but an economical one, as president Trump has launched a real "economical war" against Europe and other countries across the world, by creating a lot of taxes for foreign products, which can have a bad impact on our trade with the USA.
However, Europe (and especially the European Union) might want to build a supranational military to protect itself from other countries, as european nations should be able to defend themselves without the USA's help, and merging all the various national militaries of european countries into one bigger army could be a great way to improve european strength in diplomacy and warfare.

I think that it is within Europe's rights to build an army to stand up against outside threats, though implying political strain between the USA and Europe might be awkward, the fact is that being a less powerful partner in an alliance is not ideal.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, we don't know how any wars that could happen in the future will be waged: if the USA and Europe end up on opposing sides of a conflict, which is unlikely for the moment, then will the military that Macron wants to build be useful? I doubt it.
