Boys'books ?
Treasure Island by R.L Stevenson has been described by a critic as ' the best of boys' books.'
Do you agree with this statement?  Do you think some books are  for boys only?

  1. "Treasure Island" is an adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1883. I've already read this book three years ago, and I don't think that it is only address to boys. Because the ambiance is not oblige to please boys, and can be appreciate by some girls, or girls generally.
The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including treasure maps marked with an "X", the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen carrying parrots on their shoulders. Girls can learn to like this world, usually for boys, but it doesn't mean that it moves them apart from it.
The statement "the best of boys' books" given on Stevenson's book can be debate. For example, I've made the experience as I've read this book and I really enjoyed it. Usually I don't really appreciate reading but it was a really good surprise and it became one of the best book I've ever read.
I liked the vibes and the author's inspirations. It has let me open my interests on more things, even less "girly".
And, can some books really be only for boys? I don't think so, because any "boys' subject" can be appreciate by girls. It happens that girls have the same hobbies like boys (sports, music and others). So why can't they appreciate the same books? It's just a question about tastes of each of us and it can be very different between us.

  2. To begin with, " Treasure Island " is an aventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. This book is very famous and has been described, by a critic as ' the best of boys' books '.
So, do I agree with this statement ? Do I think some books are for boys only ?

First of all, I think I read this book when I was younger. As a result, I don't remember very well the story ! However, by this book, I learnt many information about the world of pirates like treasure maps and of course one-legged seamen carrying parots on their shoulders ( like Aurore said it before me).

Therefore, I fully agree with this statement because generally boys love this athmosphere, like when there is action ! By this book, we can easily develop your imagination !

Nevertheless, I don't think that some books are for boys only because for example, I enjoyed this book and I'm not a boy ! So, I think it depends on the person and in the person's mood : if the person like reading or not !

To conclude, I invite all the teenagers to read this book even if you are a girl or even if we are a little bit older for this kind of book !

  3. Treasure Island is a young adult literature novel by the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1883.
This book is considered as one of the better “boy's book”. Why ? Do I agree with this ? Are there books for boys only ?

To begin, Treasure Island is considered as a “boy's book” because it talks about pirates, treasures, adventures.
However, girls can like these topics so I disagree with the statement. So you can like or dislike this kind of book, even if you're a boy or a girl !
I don't share my opinion because I 've never read this Treasure Island. But many persons told me it was really nice and they weren't boys for all that !
I don't think some books are for boys only. As the others said before : it depends on the character and tastes !
Maybe some books are more read by boys than girls but the contrarly is possible too : like girls reading love novels. Some boys read this kind of book and some girls read detective novels.

In conclusion, books are not only reserved for boys or girls. Reading “boy's books” or “girl's books” can change your reading habits. You can discover new things, new authors. Moreover it brings culture to you !

  4. Some are. Why? Well, because everybody tends to prefer one theme to another, and sometimes those themes are selected because of cultural standards.
I this case, yes, you'll see that a higher proportion of books about sports are read by boys, whereas animal books are mostly read by girls, for example.
So, yes, there can be a difference… among low-quality books.
Because, when it comes to good books, the writing is usually good enough to make the book interesting whatever the theme is (you don't trust me? So how can you explain the success of realism, huh?).
It does not mean that absolutely everybody will like those books, but it means that it will depend on the author's style, and as far as I know, no author is especially known as a writer for boys/girls.
But I know you, behind your screen, thinking about how you could stump me, you suddenly want to ask: and what about good books with a subject that would be more liked by boys/girls?
Well, there are two possibilities: usually those books do not exist! If it's really a good book the theme will probably become “universal”.
There can also be a separation between famous books and other books: for example we could say that White Fang is a book about animals, but it is rather know “just” as a famous book.
So, what about Treasure Island? It was published in 1883, which means one century and a half ago! Back in the Victorian Era, it surely wasn't proper for young girls to read stories about dirty and violent men! That's probably why it is considered as a boy's book.

Oh, by the way, I heard that somebody posted very interesting things on old topics. If I were you I would check these, especially about the subject of the 2010/04/24… : )
