Legal weed: morality vs economics The state of Colarado legalized the recreational use of marijuana a few months ago. What is your opinion about such a decision? Should your country /state do the same?
The debate about the legalization of the weed is very important today ! In France, at this time, we don't legalize it. However, some countries legalized weed for several reasons. For example, the state of Colorado legalized the recreational use of marijuana a few monyhs ago ! So, what is my opinion about such a decision ? Should France do the same ?
In the first place, it is forbidden to consume or to sell all kinds of weed in France since a long time. However, some scientifics found a few months ago that some kind of " weed " was good for our health like the cannabis. For this reason, I agree to legalize weed.
Nevertheless, for the recreational use, it's an other thing. We can't legalize it, to my mind, because if you consume a lot of this product, you will be in danger and dependant of that ! Legalize weed is to approve this situation. It's impossible to imagine that. Here, it's a moral reason.
Last but not least, I think some countries legalize weed for economic reasons. Indeed, if you can, by the law, buy marijuana, cannabis and other things like that, people will buy these products. Therefore, the government will earn all this money !
To conclude, I think legalize weed can be a good and a bad idea. It depends on the country. In France, we shouldn't do the same as in Colorado because we are not ready and our society is not very open-minded !
What is my opinion about legal use of marijuana ? First of all marijuana is very dangerous for the brain but if it is legalized there will be no dealer and dealer are often a problem because there are some murder due a money , and people commit suicide because they have debts. So , I don't have really opinon because drug are become commonplace because the drug are become commonplace, so long as consumers consume without having problems with unsavory people. Drug is already more or less within the reach of everybody, and this is forbidden as it is often forbidden attracts some young.
I find it hard to position myself on this subject because I do not feel concerned and there are too many pros and cons for me to have a precise idea
In Washington D.C. the goverment has decriminalized the possession of marijuana, this was because of a new study done that showed weed was actually better to smoke than tabacco. But it has also been proven to be a "gate-way drug" wich means that most people who smoke weed end up taking harder durgs, such as Methamphetamine, and Heroine. These drugs kill thousands of people in the USA every year. With that in mind I am very much against the legalization of weed, but I also belive that it is too late, 20 states have already legalized the use of medicinal marijuanain 10 of those states you do not need an ID card to smoke. Almost every other state has some sort of bill in congress trying to legalize weed. So even though I am against the legalization of weed i belive that there is not anything anyone can do to stop it from happening.
A few months ago, the state of Colorado legalized the recreational use of marijuana to anyone age 21 or older. It is the first place in the world where marijuana has been regulated from seed to sale. What's my opinion about such decision ? Should France do the same ?
First of all, legalization of marijuana implicates some taxes : the additional revenue would amount $67 million a year and it will be used to build schools, hospitals … So, money earned on it will be used for good reasons. Legalization also avoids illegal traffics. Marijuana can be used for medecine like the cancer, but it can be dangerous if you abuse or if you are addictive. I think authorities must regulate doses.
In France, consuming marijuana is illegal. In the same time, it is the country where people consume most. So, French state have to legalize cannabis to permit prevention and take care of the cannabis users. Moreover legalize cannabis will avoid illegal traffics, in particular in suburbs. Maybe the government prefer turn a blind eyes on illegal traffics to avoid social tensions. The problem is important. But it will be very difficult to legalize marijuana because there are plenty of opponents.
In France, we can consume alcohol. For me, alcohol is often more dangerous than cannabis. It is the French paradox !
As far as i am concerned, i think all drugs are dangerous for health. It might even be lethal for you. So, why more and more countries have legalized it ?
I think they’re doing this in order to cope with the drug trafficking. That way, they think it should be possible to control it. However, it doesn’t solve the real problem here, which is the dependency. A drug addict will still buy it whether it’s illegal or legal. The legalization of marijuana will obviously lead to more people who will be dependent on drugs.
It’s a bit wicked for governments to sell hard drugs because they know it’s a trap. Therefore, they will use it as an industry. I personally think it’s a prety morbid thing to do, especially for a state.
To finish, I guess people who are hooked on drugs won’t stop unless they realize they are going to die a dog’s death. That’s when they seriously break this never ending cycle.
Hi, I agree with some of you. Marijuana is very dangerous for health but let's put it another way. If marijuana is not legalized it leads to traficking and violence because selling means money and there will always be drug addicts to buy it. Yet, if it is legalized there will be no longer drug traffickers because marijuana will be sold everywhere and they won't earn money by selling it. However I would prefer it not to be legalized, not to involve more drug addicts.

The weed legalization varies from country to country. Even the possesion of weed is illegal in most of the countries, many have decriminalized it. Furthermore, possesion is legal in some states like Colorado. And the medicinal use of weed is legal in a number of countries. However, simple possession can carry long jail sentences in some countries and the sale may lead to life imprisonment or even execution. Worldwide, weed is the most popularly used illegal drug. Attitudes regarding weed regulation have also changed as some states (Colorado and Washington) have passed their own laws legalizing weed for recreational use. But I don't think it's a good idea to do it here. Otherwise if it becomes legal, will less people use it? Probably not, but the hope makes us dream and it may happen if we follow those states which did it.
Marijuana is a drug that acts on the mental activity. It has many popular names : grass, cannabis, hash, Mary Jane … The state of Colorado has decided to legalize the use of marijuana. What's my opinion if my country legalized drugs ? Marijuana may have benificial effects, it's used in the medical field. But indivudal consumption and unattended marijuana affects brain dévelopment and can also trigger schizophrenia. A driver under marijuana puts in danger his own life but also the others. All drugs are a health hazard and therefore our lifes. One becomes addicted, it's no longer master of his life, it's the marijuana and its daily dose that manages our lifes. Legalizing marijuana would fight against drug trafficking and that would be the end of the dealers. To Legalize marijuana would perhaps make consumers to produce better quality and probably less dangerous because marijuana isn't tampered with. From an economic point of view, the legalization of marijuana enable the state to get additional taxes . Legalization would probably create new jobs. Using marijuana is bad for health but it may be good for deseases. I don't know if my country is really ready for legalization even from an economic point of view it will be good. I think for a moral point of view, it's better not to legalize drugs which kill us.
Personally, I believe marijuana should not be legal anywhere for recreational use. Some doctors prescribe marijuana as a prescription for patients who have metal illnesses. This could have a side-affect because there could be an addiction instead of using it to feel better. In Maryland, they are still debating whether to legalize the drug.If the drug is legalized what other drug would they decide on next.
Hi Krystele! I'm Mary, one of the American students. Your English is very good and impressive. Just make sure that for your last sentence you use a "?" for punctuation because you are asking a question. Other than that, awesome job! I agree with your opinion as well.
I also think that marijuana should not be legalized. Although it has some beneficial medicinal properties, it can also have very negative effects on one's health. It is very addictive and it increases the risk of heart attacks and respiratory infections. It also impairs one's thinking and problem solving skills. Not only is it dangerous to the person using it, but it is also dangerous to those around that person.
The legalization of the cannabis is within many debates. So what's my opinion about such a decision? Should France do the same?
First of all, cannabis is totally illegal in France. Still, many people take this drug and don't realize bad effects on their health.
However, the science proves benefits on certain diseases. Indeed, the cannabis would calm pains, psychological trouble or mental disorders.
But one should not forget that this legalization implicates taxes. For this purpose, it's interesting to sleep on it given that all this money will be used for public services (hospitals, school, so on).
Besides, many dealers live on it because of the illegality. Consequently, legalize it would ''punish'' them because they'd earn less of money...
Nonetheless, if the cannabis is legalized, we don't have to trivialize this weed because it impairs immune defense system and that is irreversible.
In conclusion, despite of bad effects on health, France should legalize it for at any rate, it won't prevent people from taking drugs, on the contrary!
I don't really think it is a good idea to legalize the recreational use of marijuana because more and more people will use it, everyone could use it, but I also think it would be good to do a referendum to know what the inhabitants of the country think about it.
However, the illegal use is not good too, so maybe if we legalize it, there will be less dealers and the addicts would maybe smock less because the state could check and control their consumption and if they are too addict they would go to special centers. The legalization for medical use is also good and we should allow it.
In short, there are some arguments for and against so people should really discuss about this and maybe look at the polls : if there is less consumption in countries where it is legalized or in countries where it is not. That is a very good and interesting debate but also hard to make a decision !
Should France legalize weed? This is still a difficult debate. We have to weigh up the pros and cons. There are good arguments on both sides.
First of all, Cannabis is a drug wich is used today by a large proportion of people. So it is clear prohibition isn't working. However the question is would legalisation increase its use? Maybe the fact that is illegal, makes it attractive for many people, particulary teenagers. What's more, crimilasing drugs costs a lot of money for the state. They have to pay police, Judges, lawyers...etc. On the other hand, many people believes that we should try to fight against drugs abuse to prevent it becoming normal. It is also important to protect vulnerable people ( people who make bad decisions).
To conclude, it is not a decision to be taken lightly. The best way to decide is to research carefully.
I think it was wrong to legalize recreational marijuana because creates more risk not only for the smoker but also the people around. I think marijuana should be only used for medical purposes.
You have good grounds to say that, It is why we can't legalize it because it would be more accessible for everyone and a substance considered unhealthy cannot be produced and distributed with the help of the state, because the goal of the state is to protect citizens’ health and not to expose them to risk.
The cannabis is one of the most consumme drug, it is very easily of access but dangerous for the health. Why would have had to legalize cannabis ?
First of all this drug is dangerous for everybody because it is accessible very easily thanks to developed distribution network However I Think that the legalization would have permeated a better control of the customers and of the products. The criminal network would have been destroy Also it would have had economic benefits thank to the taxes on this product and less money would have been spend to prevent the traffic.
To conclude I think that the legalization would have been a good thing.
I think that the ban as practiced in our country is ineffective. Anyone can get cannabis anywhere and very cheap. The dealers, always in the same place, are tolerated since they can not all be sent to prison. Prohibition does not apply the rules. But having rules that do not work greatly undermine democracy. I do not encourage cannabis use. But we are obliged to note that the police should concentrate on terrorism, on large traffickers, rather than on the arrests of cannabis users, which are increasing in number. The focus on users is a recent development. It is the ease of arresting these people, it has no efficiency, but it makes it possible to "make the number". What are the advantages of legalization? The only thing to do is to legalize, like several American states, to monopolize distribution, control it, prohibit advertising, be severe with those who sell cannabis to minors, Place a very strict control by the State like what has been done on alcohol or tobacco. Once the price of cannabis is expensive (that of a cigarette package is 80% of taxes), consumption will be limited. Legalization would also reduce the attraction of infringing a prohibition with the younger ones. Controlling is the only way to restore order.
