Fake news

French fugitive Xavier de Ligonnès, suspected of killing wife and children, was supposedly arrested in Glasgow last Friday. It all happened to be fake news as the man arrested had nothing to do with the case.   Do you think the media, as usual, wasted no time in  rushing to conclusions? If TV news spread fake news, who are we supposed to believe?

  1. First of all, I think when the police arrested the wrong person, they must-have really thought it was Xavier de Ligonnès.
They probably realized after a DNA test that they had arrested the wrong person and that a murderer was still out there.
The media may have wanted to get the news out as quickly as possible without any confirmation or certainty.
This is indeed a huge mistake because they may have put many people at risk.
Perhaps the people who lived in the area were relieved and then stopped paying attention and staying on guard, but it would have been necessary to be vigilant because the murderer was still here.
The media here wasted no time in rushing conclusions, and put the population in danger.
The media should really pay more attention to the news they spread, they should deliver news only after being really sure.
But I think the journalists just wanted to inform the public as soon as they had the information, as soon as possible, in order to give an answer to the families of the victims perhaps.
They must not have thought that by doing this, they would spread fake news, that it would be dangerous.
I think that TV news can relay fake news, sometimes without knowing it because behind the articles there are real people, humans who are not sure of anything.
In first hand, I think that we unfortunately have no choice to take into account the news of the press in certain situations because they are often the only ones who have information and can enlighten us on certain subjects. And, I don’t think the press has bad intentions.
But on the other hand I think we have to be careful because sometimes, as in this case, journalists can be wrong so it is necessary to think before believing certain things, waiting for real evidences and remaining vigilant. There are certain issues on which we must not be naive, believing everything is a part.
In addition, TV news often extrapolates certain facts in order to create a buzz.
To conclude, I think that we often have to make our own opinions about the news reported by the press. They’re not always right, sometimes distort the news. We must then take into account what they are telling us while we are thinking, waiting for evidence so that the news can be confirmed but especially not believe everything.

  2. Hello,
I've heard about this in the TV news indeed but it was a fake news. So, first of all, I think that it's sad that the autority didn't caught this Xavier de Ligonnès because if he really killed his wife and children, he deserves jail. About the fake news: in my opinion, TV news are just looking to have content and, if someone give them some informations with proof, they will instantly talk about it even if the news isn't verified. The goal of a TV chain is to obtain audience by any way possible even if sometimes they lie. So, to conclude, I'm not surprised about this practice even if it's really bad because the family that have lost some members of their families because of him could thought that they are going to get justice but it was just a dream and finally they obtain nothing.

  3. Hello everyone,

Fake news is a real problem in our society nowadays. When people read something in a website that they believe to be a valid source, they can choose to automatically believe everything that they read, without checking the informations, or looking at who wrote the article. In my opinion, the solution to that problem is to have a critical mind and to verified everything that we read, and to cross the information on different websites.

  4. Hello everyone,
In the Cambridge dictionary, fake news are false information that appears to be news, broadcast on the Internet or other media, usually created to influence political opinions or as a joke.
But in fact, in this case, it is not really a false news. This is more of a phenomenon related to the news of television, which exaggerates more and more information. This is because the cable landscape is very competitive and the only way for a network to attract enough audience is to appeal to a small group of viewers that the information is true or false. This is the same reason why other cable channels seem to have narrower priorities each year. You must have your opinion on the cable, otherwise you will not distinguish what is true or false. You must be suspicious. The media must be sensational (have scoops): sensationalism has always sold well. Each media must be the first to announce news and expose it as a scoop.
This is what happened with the man supposed to be Dupont de Ligonnes. And for once, our French televisions had to apologize for not having verified the information or not having waited.
So we must be wary when we hear about scoops.

  5. Hello everyone,
I think that this is a perfect example of what was said in the oral comprehension "The British press and online journalism". The media and today's readers are more interested in drama, short articles that don't go deep into the roots of the problems we face and are more about the visuals, videos and pictures. This means we don't search for the real story, the truth, and this enables the media to slack off and produce less in depth articles.
However, the audio also highlighted the fact that the online networking has some good aspects to it. For example, we now have access to more voices and more views from all around the world. The trick is keeping an open mind and never believing that a story or article is 100% true. We should also always check the sources of the articles we read.
In conclusion, to me all news is partly fake news and we should all keep a critical eye on everything we read to form our own opinions on the matters at hand.

  6. First of all, I did some searches and I discovered that the fake news came from the police of Scotland where the suspect was arrested. The media indeed believed the police because they thought they had evidences; the suspect’s fingerprint looked like the murderer’s. Moreover, media probably releaved this information because they trusted the police which is a reliable institution . Furthermore, the medias like Tv news often relay fake news because they prefer to be the first to spread out the information rather than checking if it is true or not. There are several ways to know which news are fake or not.
On the one hand, we must compare the same information from different sources. If the same news is relayed by a lot of different media which are reliable, it’s probably true. Nevertheless we can almost never be sure if we don’t have evidences and if we didn’t see what happenned. On the other hand, some applications and software which detect fake news exist so we can use them.
To conclude, to my mind, we have to be very careful to the media we get the information from.

  7. Hello,
I heard a little bit about the story and it is distressing that they didn't caught the killer if he killed his wife and children.
To talk in general fake news are a problem in our generation because today you can hear on internet everythings which is not verified from a reliable source and most of the people will belive the news without checking themselves. On TV it's similar they want to catch your attention to make more audience maybe it is not exactly the case in this event because this one is confused. Also on TV it depends on the TV channel you choose some are more or less famous of their safety
In conclusion we should be careful where we find information and we sould check for their validity

Honestly, I suppose that all media wanted to be the first to disclose information to increase the number of Internet users. Accordingly , the information was poorly verified or not at all. Moreover, share some fakes news on a criminal case, it's serious. So, they hate to reveal false information for their interest.
Then, as far as I know, there is not really who to trust in this world, because most of them think only of money. In short, we do not have a newspaper in particular to trust, so by hearing this kind of information, we would have to look further and not believe the first newscast that says something. And even if the research is wrong and well we are bad ...

  9. Hello,
To my opinion I think that the media wasted no time in rushing to conclusions, because it was not Xavier de Ligonnès. They said that we can't escape the french police, They valued them etc.. But it wasn't him, so they realized after a DNA test that they had arrested the wrong person. I know that at least 12 DNA matches are required to validate the test.

  10. I think that fake news are becoming a real problem, because even "reliable" media, like old newspapers and the radio, share them. Before, fake news were to be found mostly on the Internet, but nowadays they are everywhere and one doesn't know who to trust. The case of Dupont de Ligonnès shows that : the journalists wrote articles without even minding to check their informations, which is why all newspapers said that the man who had been arrested was Dupont de Ligonnès, although it wasn't him at all. So, if mainstream journalists are too lazy to do their work properly, who are we supposed to believe ? I think that government websites can be trusted, because official websites (prefectures' websites, for instance) don't share information as rapidly as the media, as they don't need to make money.

  11. First of all, I think the media feels a pression, they all want to be the first one telling the news so they are rushing things.
News work only if you have an audience. I don’t watch Tv news because I don’t trust them anymore. It’s a big shame because everyone started to get excited because they thought that he will finally pay for his terrible actions but no all of this is, was just a mistake. Also I feel very sorry for the guy that was arrested because I don’ think the police treated him well, (I know they had some evidence against him like the fingers print). To conclude we should stop believing everything that is said to us especially in our society.

  12. Hello,
In my opinion, I think that fake news is dangerous, but the most dangerous phenomenon is what people do with this fake news. Indeed, if I write a fake information in a paper in my bedroom, the impact of this information is insignificant. The real problem is that a lot of people trust this fake news and worst share it. Fake news exists thanks to social media and mass effect.
I think that government must impose to TV news channels that they must check and have a clue about a news before publishing it. Moreover, I hope that if we make people aware of fake news, we can stem the wheels of this societal twist.

  13. Hello.
I think that, nowadays, medias are just trying to catch the attention of the audience and they just don't care anyway (or they just care less) about the veracity of what they are saying. So today, it is difficult to be totally trustful about them. I find it really unfortunate

  14. in my opinion the fakes news have become quite frequent and present because nowadays the media do not take the time to affirm or not their articles and rush to publish them without knowing if they are true or not

  15. Hello!
fake news are false information that is spread by the media, social networks ... I think we will have to be more attentive to read and check the information. If several sites say the same things this could perhaps say that this information is not necessarily false.
    Good evening.

  16. Hello,
Tv always spread fake news concerning a lot of subjects like
politic or murders. Indeed, rich people buy a part of the medias to control them and if they control medias, they control people’s opinion. So, medias are a very corrupt sector. The case of Xavier de Ligonnès is one among any others, in my opinion I think that someone has paid medias to denounce him or something like this. That’s why I think we must do our own search and don’t be naïve.
