  1. Hello,
My prefer passage is when John de Courcy becomes free because the suspens is finish and I feel relieved. And the end of the story is good, so I'm happy to this.

  2. To answer your question, when I read this book, I really liked the end of the story when we all discovered the truth. Indeed, when John de Courcy is accused at the beginning of the text, of the theft of the Duke's ring, the suspens is important. We cannot imagine what is going to happen next....
Futhermore we can add that, some expressions were used when, for example, there were a lot of noise in the court so, the Duke said : " This is a court of law, not a playhouse". After that, some caracters came and talked ( or showed, for the servant-boy ), about the acts they had seen during those few days. However, after some debates, several girls were promissed to a wonderful marriage with Sir Edgar Hardridge, the Duke's nephew ! Finally, as a good end, John de Courcy " is guilty of no crime". In my opinion, happy endings are more pleasant especially when honest people "wins" aigainst manipulators.

  3. Of course I read " The Fortunes of John de Courcy" and for me ,I have 2 favorites passages in the book.
The first passage is when John de Courcy was elected as the Scholar of the Duke of Gloucester!I love the reactions of everyone "with cheers and whistles and cries".Then ,my second passage is when Emilie Banter appeared at the John De Courcy's trial dressed in Jane's clothes ! This moment was very funny.

  4. John de Courcy is a detective story from Philippa Boston which takes place in the sixteenth century, a strain period between Catholic and Protestant.
If I would have to choose a moment in this plot, I think I'd choose the moment when Maude Mansfield saves Emilie Bunter and talks to her. Indeed, it's a passage in which one there are a lot of feelings because Emilie shows what she's made of. As a result, this moment is touching because it's the only passage devoted to women in this plot where the main characters are mainly men.
Furthermore, I enjoyed the lawsuit because there was suspense and I were keep in suspense. Moreover, there are a lot of unexpected developments.
To conclude, I advise this book because reading it, you can learn plenty of things about history. Then, it is an interesting story with touching characters.

    1. I'd like to correct a mistake that I've done writing my answer. It's about "If I would have to choose..." whereas I should have said "If I had to choose..."

  5. Philippa Boston, on that great book, mixes history and fiction. I loved both sides, and learned a lot whithout even noticing it, thanks to this interessting story. What was my favourite aspect of the book ?

Beside the historical aspect, I loved Maude Mansfield's character. She is strong and independant, despite the fact she is a girl in a man world. John de Courcy even recognize, at the end of the book, that she deserves the Duke's Scholarship. She makes Jane's character unbearable to my mind, since she is a manipulable and superficial young woman. Moreover, even if Emilie is a prostitute, she stays determinded in spite of the difficulties and betrayals.

To conclude, I loved how Emilie and Jane saved John, and they are, as far as I am concerned the real heroes of that story.

  6. Hello !
During my holidays, I read "The Fortunes of John de Courcy" by Philippa Boston and my favourite passage it's when ; The third horse, disturbed by the sudden jumping of the boy, lost its balance on the Frozen earth and ejected its rider ( Philip Howard, The Duke ) and after that Edgar accused John because he thinks that John de Courcy scare his horse. So I like this passage because we can see the "bad figure" of Edgar Hardridge and it's also the beginning of the adventure of John de Courcy.

  9. Hello !

I read the book John de courcy twice because I loved the story .

All the story is awesome but my favourite passage is the end of the story because in a novel , the more interesting is when the survey is solved . No more lies , just the truth !
The duke had good grounds to say that John stole the ring but finally , he had to admit that he was wrong . Indeed, John was accused to be a thief but he wasn't guilty and , as for me , injustice is horrible .
Eventually , during the court of law , John was free .
It was the end of the big suspense .
Nevertheless , the end of the story is great because John is free and he is still the Duck's scholar .
Duke's nephew , Mr Croke , and the lord prelate are guilty and I was so happy to discover it because they were mean with Emilie and John .

Besides , I'd like to point out that my favourite novels are police novels .

To conclude , this book was very interesting and the end was great :)

  10. I fully agree with Claire's opinion about happy endings and also with Coline (but I think in the conclusion she wanted to say "Maude" and not Jane).

This book was extremely exciting and I read it in few days as I enjoy it.
At the beginning of the story, when John de Courcy held responsible for the Duke's ring stealing, I was astonished and I strongly knew that it cannot be the thief.
But in the course of the reading, when I started to understand how manipulable Meg, Jane and Edgar were, I realised that it will not be as easy as I thought to prove John's innocence.
My favourite part is when people discovered Emilie's flight because she didn't derserve to be captivity. Fortunately, she was clever enough to open the skylight to give the impression that she had escaped onto the roof.

I spend a really good time when I read this book full of suspens.
In other words, I advise it to everyone!

    2. I would like to correct several mistakes.
First, I wrote "it" (line 5) instead of "he" when I talked about John de Courcy
And then, I forgot the "e" at the end of suspens.

  11. The Fortune of John de Courcy is a book written by Phillipa Boston. The story takes place in 1582 in Oxford, during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign when there were religious tensions, between Protestants and Catholics in England.

As for me, the favourite part of the book is when we understand that Meg was cooperating with Edgar because he promised to marry her. Therefore, I particularly like this moment because it was totally unexpected, she never acted as if she was against John. In other words, it adds a bit of spice to the story which is, though, full of suspens. I was then curious to find out how the truth was going to be known and how John’s innocence could be proved.

To conclude, I appreciated this book very much because held the reader spellbound until the very end of the story. So I recommend it blindly to anybody who likes cliff-hanger.

  13. During the holidays I read the fortunes of John de Courcy I loved the story but my favourite passage of the book is when Maude finally found Emilie because we think that there is no hope for her to survive because she hasn't drunk since a long time and she is cold. She is laying in the dark, she doesn't know where she is and she thinks that she's going to die. So she decided to sleep a little bit when she hears a voice! It's Maude who came to save her. At this moment I was really surprised and relived because thanks to Maude Emilie was safe!

  16. Hello!

As for me, my favourite passage in this book, it is the end of the storie because after severals pages we know the truth!!!
At first sight everybody accused John particulary the Duck.
I'm very happy to know that the culpable of this conspiracy is not John but the Duck'nephew, the lord and Mr Crock and I think that is a good revenge because they are very mean with many people particulary with the main character.

  17. Of course, I read the book "the Fortunes of John de Courcy". This book was written in 1582 by Phillipa Boston, an English writer and journalist who lives in Oxford. The story takes place in oxford, in 1582. In the reign of queen Elisabeth I, religious tensions between Protestants and Catholics divide the nation. In oxford, dark forces conspire to destroy the brilliant Young philosopher, John de Courcy.

To answer to your question, I think the story is very interesting and exciting beacause there is a lot of suspens! I fully agree with all the pupils: the best passage is when we learn the truth in the end of the story, because John is free and innocent.
I also agree with Emilie. I like the passage when we understand that Meg was cooperating with Edgar because he promised to marry her. Indeed, like Emilie said, it was unexpected. I was shocked!
I also like the moment when Jane find the duke's ring in John's Pocket because I didn't expect that! So these are my favourite passage.

To conclude, I really like this book and there's a lot of suspens. So if you like stories with suspens, I advise you to read this book!

  18. My favorite passage is when Jane Mansfield find the ducal ring in Jonh's pocket. When i read this, i was astonished, I really didn't expect that, we also know that sir Edgar managed all, indeed, he proposed the game because he knew the ring was in his pocket. I found that Sir Edgar was a good strategist but really vicious, it makes me angry when I know John is accused of stealin the ring.
