Gap Year

In the UK, it has become very popular to spend a year in another country AFTER finishing your final exams (A-Levels) at school and BEFORE going to university. Many people travel  to the countries of their dreams, volunteer in poorer countries, or even earn money whilst gaining some experience in the world of work. This is known as a 'Gap year', and most people who take a gap year are aged 18-19.

My question to you is: would you like to take a gap year? If so, where in the world would you go and what would you do?

Let your imagination run wild!

  1. A Gap Year is really interesting for someone who wants to discover another culture or even improve oneself into another language like for example, English.
Besides, it let us have a new experience which bring maturity, autonomy for generally, when we're 18, we just left parents' home or we still live there. It's a good moment to take one's independence.
I think, If I could spend a year in another country, it would be in the USA (I know, it's cliche). I love this country and it will be incredible if I could go there just to discover more about the country and particularly about culture and way of life. Moreover, it enables me to speak English in real situations and improve my English. Some people told me USA are not as much amazing as I think but it can stop me hoping to go there one day.
However, I don't know if I prefer leave before or after my studies at university. The 2 possibilities are problems, in my opinion. This year is a gap, as we can see its name, and make us stop working which can be annoying when we come back.
To conclude, a gap year is an experience which we must choice with reflection although it would be very enriching. In all cases, If I could go to USA, I would stay there forever.

  4. I think a Gap Year is THE best way to get way better in English. I've spent my sophomore year (last year) in Lakewood, Colorado. I lived at my aunt's and uncle's house, and went to the same high school as one of my cousins.
Before leaving, I had a little apprehension, because I was only 15, and didn't know that much of English. I have to admit the first months were the hardest, I basically didn't know anyone, I felt like a stranger, I also had to listen very carefully to every word my friends said, I had to get used to the American accent, and had to practice my English. But once I stopped struggling with all of that, I really started enjoying my gap year. And I definitely recommend to anyone to leave in a foreign country to practice a language. The best way to progress is to be immersed in the subject. By living in a foreign country for a year, we can learn about its culture and mentality, get used to the accent, learn and observe so many things!
To conclude, I think taking a Gap Year is the best way to learn a language. I recommend a year or more, because I don’t think 6months would be enough. It is an amazing thing to do, and I hope you will all experience it!

Wow, Jade, that sounds fantastic! You were very lucky to be in such a beautiful place, too! I agree that whilst it may seem daunting (=scary) at first, it is a very interesting and worthwhile experience. :)
