Which hidden figures helped to improve your lives ?

24 comments:

  1. Thomas Pesquet is a figure who is known by what he did and still do, but he stays discrete… hidden, apart from too much people.

He braught some fantastiques things in my life because of his humility, and his lot of qualities as his calm, patience, kindness, simplicity and what he does in the space. He shows me that we can be intelligent and have a hughe knowledge and be a wonderful and simple person. He si wonderful because he shares what he saw with passionated as me, he explains a lot of things and gives a lot of details, he is very involved in what he does. Because of him i could discover and learn a lot of thing about the space, the stars and a lot of others things. It is very great for me because i’m very interested in space. He changed my life in that way.

  3. During the 40´s Carrie Best fought for her rights as a black woman. She launched the first black female owned newspaper and founded the Quiet Corner radio. Her fight for human rights earned her the Black Profesional Women’s group Award and many other prices. She died in 2001 but her work has not been recognized. Why her actions and her career weren’t recognized enough ?
First of all, we will explain how she managed to win all this prices and in second place we will see why she is not known in our days.
Carrie Best did a lot of actions in her life that made her an important person. On the one hand, she won many prices, founded a lot of institutions for black women but on the other hand, she was featured on google only on December 2021. In 1943, she confronted racial segregation by sitting on white seats at the Roselyne theater in New Glasgow. This could be compared to Rosa Parks when she refused to moove from a white seat in a bus. Carrie Best was arrested and had to pay a cotion. This motivated her to found the Clarion, the first black-owned newspaper.
Althought the fact that she had a great career is not known in our days. Indeed, during her trial against Roseland theater, she lost the case. The judje didn’t want everyone to hear about it. He kind of covered it up. She lived during segregation so people didn’t want a black woman to suceed.
In conclusion, I really believe that Carrie Best did the right thing. She fought for her rights and didn’t give up. She made herself heard throught her newspaper and her radio and won many awards. That is nonsense that nobody knows her these days.

  4. Born on 25 August 1927 and died on 23 September 2003, Althea Gibson was an American tennis player in the 1950s. She also has eleven Gran Slam wins. The quote «  Being a champion is all well and good, but you cant eat a crown » by Althea Gibson shows the virtues and values that tennis instilled in her. Our problematic will be : Despite racial segregation, is a black woman's success bad for her in the 1960s? Firstly, we intend to show the reasons for her success during racial segregation in the US, and then to make links with the various hidden figures in order to draw common points.
The reasons for its success at that time is that during the 1950s segregation was not yet developed. However, racism was present, particularly as a result of the colonisation of the Americas, which had led to slavery. In addition, in the 1950s, tennis was not politicised, so success for a woman of colour was less marked in the sporting sphere than in the political sphere, for example.
On the one hand, tennis is not a sport that is the most supported in the world today. This could be the reason why Althea Gibson is less famous today than she was then. On the other hand, her fame in the past is mainly due to her skin colour, her success in this sphere and her fight against segregation. Furthermore , she remains present for those who experienced segregation and are still alive. Indeed, she remains one of the examples of success despite racial segregation.
Althea Gibson was the one who made it possible to show the success of a black woman at that time. She thus opened the minds of women who are now shadow figures. We can compare the case of Althea Gibson to that of the Williams sisters, who will become tennis figures 40 years later.
In my opinion, Althea Gibson's success is totally deserved for her time, but the fact that she is not remembered by most people today is unfair. She totally deserves her success and I think that is absolutely right because she opened the eyes of many women and contributed to their success.

I'm going to talk about Eunice Newton Foote, the person who discovered greenhouse effect.
She was born in 1819 in Goshen and she died in 1888 at Lenox.
As a woman, she was not considered as a scientific, even If she studied as hard as other men, she was considered as an amateur.
She discovered the importance of carbone dioxyde into greenhouse effect.
But, because she was a woman she couldn't present her results to the assembly.
So Joseph Henry exposed them for her. He first said this to the assembly :"Science was of no country and of no sex. The sphere of woman embraces not only the beautiful and the useful, but the true. "
Furthermore, what she found out hadn't been published into "proceedings ", even If it was supposed to publish every discovered.
But they were published into "The American journal of Science and Art", and it was not a success.
Three years later, an Irishman, John Tyndall, published the same thing with more precisions, and peopoe thought that he discovered greenhouse effect, nobody knew Eunice Newton Foote.
Did John Tyndall steal Eunice's works?
One the one hand, Roland Jackson thinks that he didn't copy her, because communications between America and Europe were Bad. He thinks that John Tyndall had an avantages, because he was a man and because he had a better equipement.
One the other hand, John Perlin thinks that he actually copied her, because John Tyndall was the editor of a British journal wich was taking articles from "The American journal of Science and Art".Eunice's husband, Elisha Foote, had written an article wich was next to Eunice's one in the American version. We can also find it into the British version, but not Eunice's one.
Officialy, we don't know if he copied her or not.
In my opinion, you can't read something you will publish and not read the thing which is next to it, so I think that he copied her.
But thanks to Ray Sorenson, who found out her work in 2011, we know that she was the first to discover it.
But I think that it's incredible that nobody knows her, because we are always talking about global wraming; climat change ; greenhouse effect... No one knows the person who discovered all this, and I think this is unfair.

  7. Jean Augustine, is a politician, she became in 1993, the first Black woman elected to the Parliament of Canada. She’s also a teacher, a politician, and a social reformer. Born on September 9, 1937, in Grenada. Jean Augustine is a huge figure in Canada especially in the black population.
At first we will see her career as well as the many awards she received afterwards we will see the positive and negative aspects of this celebrity unfortunately not known to everyone.
As I said, Jean Augustine is a politician but in the beginning she was a teacher and she had to work as a domestic. During her years as a federal member of parliament, Jean Augustine served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada. She fights for women, she served as the National President of the Congress of Black Women of Canada and supported many social causes by giving her advices like with The Hospital for Sick Children.
Jean Augustine has won a lot of awards such as; in 1987, Jean Augustine received the first Kay Livingstone award from the Canadian Congress of Black Women. Also in 2007, she was admitted to the Order of Canada “for her distinguished career as a teacher, politician and social justice activist in Canada.” Of course these are just a few examples of the many awards she has been able to win throughout her life.

In my opinion, Jean Augustine is a wonderful woman who fights her all life for black and women rights. She deserves to be more famous and not just an hidden figure. She succeeded in making herself an important place in the world of work when her skin colour and her statue of a woman prevent her from doing so. She make me think of Katherine, Dorothy and Mary in the hidden figure because like them Jean fights against inequality in the world of work.
I would like to finish with a quotes she said in a newspaper in 2002 that I really liked : “Being the first black feels good, yes, but more than that, it says to others and to ourselves that blacks can be in every place in society.”

  9. Hello today, i'm going to talk about Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler, who is the first black woman to become a doctor in the United States.
I will start by introducing Rebecca and then explain her historical importance that I will relate to the problems she has encountered. Then I will end with a conclusion.

Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler was born on February 8 1831 in Delaware and died on March 9 1895 in Massachusetts.
In 1864 she gratuated from Boston University, she was also the first black woman to obtain a doctorate in medicine. And at the end of the civil war, she treated former slaves for free.
Rebecca Crumpler lived at a time when there was still a lot of segregation, which is why she's important in history. She fought to become a doctor. She fought against sexism but especially against racism. But even after succeding to become a doctor, Rebecca still had problems. For example, pharmacists didn't want to issue her prescriptions. The other doctors snubbed her and made fun of her. No one took her seriously. It's because of her skin color that she's not known.

To conclude, I find that what she experienced was really unfair because even after successfully completing her studies, she had difficulty practicing her profession. All this because of racism. I think she should have been recognized because for having managed to do all this, she must have been really brave.

  10. Jane Mathilda Bolin is the first black women in united state to become a judge. She was born on april 11,1908 at Poughkeepsie and died on january 8,2007 in Long Island.

She was graduated from high school in her mind teens and went to Wellesley College, where she also sustains racism and social isolation. She was graduated with a bachelor in 1928 and recognized as one of the best students of her class. Then she attended Yale law school and was graduating in 1931. She becoming the first african-amercan woman to earn a law degree

She worked with her family. She practiced with her father in Poughkeepsie her father was a lawyer.
Jane Bolin was sworn in judge in the united states she devoted her career to fighting for children rights ,delinquency, child abuse and segregation. She defended justice and equality for women and children. She reminds me a little Mary in the movie « Hidden Figures » because Mary was the first black woman to enter in a university and Jane was the first black women who become a judge.
We can conclud that Jane Bolin marks history even she is not very known. During her Life she foughts for her career, her rights and other rights. We can conclud that we must always perceive and work very hard.

  11. Racism and ethnic discrimination in the United States has been a major phenomenon since colonial times and the days of slavery. Racism granted white Americans rights and privileges denied to African Americans.
"the voice of the fugitive" the first anti-slavery newspaper is a press organ founded by Mary Bibb, it is the first in the country in 1851

what impact this woman had an impact in the history of the USA

At first, I intend to explain her story to you, where she comes from and how she achieved success then we will see the recognition she gets for her deeds

Mary Elizabeth Bibb was an American-born educator and abolitionist leader. She is considered by some to be the first female black journalist in Canada. She was a teacher and abolitionist in the United States, before moving with her husband Henry Bibb to Canada after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 which made it very easy for slavecatchers to capture fugitive and free Blacks.

As one of the first black teachers in North America in the 1830s she fought to give the best possible education to blacks who were always inferior to whites in order to avoid future badly paid services like bootblacks. During these years she met many Angian slaves who managed to escape from the south, they indulged her and told her stories and the functioning there. She will marry Henry Bibb himself a runaway slave and abolutionist, which is why she embarks on anti-slavery activities.

on the one hand we see a link with the film of hidden figures because above all Mary gave herself to teach black people so that he could have open doors, we can affirm that despite a very high level of study high, white remains superior and for anything, black always has to fight harder to get his right. To draw a parallel, the 3 main characters of the hidden figures are black women who have studied, having an intellectual and academic level much higher than the whites facing them, but because of their skin color they must all their life fighting to get rights comes back to them

officially, Henry Bibb, her husband is the editor of the newspaper's publications while the ideas and the writings came from Mary her name always took second place to that of her husband. This makes me think about "Self Made" a film telling the story of Mrs. C.J Walker, a black woman who fought hard to open her own hair product business but who put it in the name of her husband who also took all the credits that did not belong to him.

Mary and Henry Bibb were the leaders of the Refugee Home Society, which helped former slaves settle in Canada, providing them with land and building schools and churches. On October 9, 1853, the office of the Voice of the Fugitive newspaper was mysteriously burned down. Mary and Henry tried to revive it, but Henry died suddenly in the summer of 1854. In the late 1950s, Mary managed to open two schools

I think that Mary had a life full of pitfalls her journey did not start as slaves but she was still very discriminated against against whites but she fought not only for her but especially for all the black community at all costs to offer them a place in society and to be able to express themselves openly thanks to its magazine. Unfortunately his relentlessness was not recognized at his time. But it wasn't until the 21st century that Windsor renamed one of its parks to honor a leader of the 19th century anti-slavery movement, Mary E. Bibb.

    Katherine Johnson

Born on August 26, 1918, died on February 24, 2020.

She contributes to the aeronautical and space programs of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and then the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

I will tell you more about Catherine, she contributed to the aeronautical and space programs of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and then the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Renowned for the reliability of its calculations in astronomical navigation

    What is his professional background?

She mainly calculated the mission of

    Including that of March

She was known for her many calculations, and her many performances within NASA

Catherine was known when she had calculated one of the largest missions, a mission that aimed to go to Mars, at that moment Catherine was known. She was not too well known before simply because she was one of the few black women to be Mathematicians at NASA. In 2015, she received the Presidential Freedom Medal and, in 2019, the United States Congress awarded her the Congressional Gold Medal.

This act was recognizable for its unforgettable acts

  13. Good morning, everyone, today I will present you Alexander
Miles, the hidden figure most know for inventing the
automatically opening and closing elevator that makes our lives
    easier every day.
At first, I will present you the problematic, then I am going to talk
about Alexander’s life and career, I will also talk about his
invention and finally I will express my opinion about it and
how it changed our lives and why we never hear about it.
How Alexander has invented something that has changed our
daily lives and proved in his time that Black people could
    succeed in business?
Alexander Miles was an Afro American man, born in 1838
in Pickaway County, Ohio, he moved to Waukesha, Wisconsin,
where he earned a living as a barber throughout the
1860s, while living in Winona, Minnesota, he met his future wife,
    Candace from New York City.
After the birth of their daughter, Grace, the family moved again
    to Duluth, Minnesota.
Alexander experienced a remarkable success as a barber in
Duluth so he opened a barbershop in the St. Louis
Hotel and even used his savings to purchase a real estate
    office.
During elevator rides in his buildings, he realized the risks of the
elevators of his times when he saw a door accidentally left open.
There were many examples of people accidentally falling
through the shaft because the elevator doors at the
time had to be operated manually.
Miles was determined to solve this problem.
    Alexander died 1918.
In my mind Alexander has succeed in business because of his
talent as a barber and because he knew how to make the right
decisions at the right time, so for me that is why he succeed and
prove to us that Black people can succeed too.
We never hear about it because they will never talk when
a Black man or women success to something.
In my opinion his invention is quite remarkable for its area,
make the things much easier and safer than before.
I am really proud of his invention because he reminds me of my
    father.
I strongly believe that this is unfair that he was not recognized
    for what he done.

Granville Tailer Woods, born April 23, 1856 and died January 30, 1910, was an African-American inventor, holder of more than 50 patents.
He is also the first African-American to serve as a mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War.
He is the inventor of the third rail, which is a power source for the metro. This system is now used in New York, London and Brussels. He also invented the parabolic antenna.
➢ why is GRANDVILLE not known? and even if his inventions are used today?
Granville Woods invents 1885 "Telegraphony", a machine combining the telephone and the telegraph he patents his invention, He sells his rights to the Bell Telephone Company, which allows communication between stations. Woods invented a system called the "multiplex telegraph" in 1887, on the same ideas as Charles Joseph van de Poehler, but apartheid did not bring Granville Woods out of anonymity because of his skin color Just like
GRANDVILLE is a forgotten inventor of his time Garrett Augustus Morgan He is the inventor of the gas mask, which allowed the rescue of tens of thousands of people during the First World War.
    ➢ Conclusion :
This subject touches us because we show very important people but the world does not know them because these people are hidden because of their skin color and their stories should be transmitted to schools.

  15. I will present you Jesse Leroy brown

Jesse Leroy Brown was born in Hattiesburg, MS. At the age of six when he attended his first air show, Brown knew he wanted to be a pilot. After attending Naval training in Ohio State University, Brown’s photo was featured in the 1948 issue of Life Magazine as the first black pilot in the U.S. Navy. While Brown had experienced racial prejudice during training, he was accepted among most of his fellow officers. While attending flight school, Brown married his love, Daisy, which was forbidden for the pilots during training. They kept their marriage a secret.

But why he had a big impact in black people life’s

After being called to the Korean war, Brown’s plane was sent to protect the 8,000 marines who were trapped near the Yalu River. During the mission, Brown’s fuel line was hit and he was forced to crash into the side of a snow-covered mountain. He was trapped in the cockpit. Brown died while Hudner tried to comfort him and keep him warm with a hat and gloves.

Thomas Hudner was forbidden to return to the site where Brown’s plane went down. The other officers made the decision to hit the crash site with Napalm bombs so the Chinese wouldn’t find Brown’s aircraft. As they dropped bombs over the area, the Lord’s Prayer was said over the radio. Now, 60 years later, Hudner will return to North Korea to help bring his friend’s remains home.

As a result of his heroism, Navy officer Thomas Hudner was awarded a Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman. Then On March 18, 1972, the U.S. Navy christened the USS Jesse L. Brown. It was the first Naval Ship named after an African American.

He reminds me Bessie Coleman because just like him she was a pilot and she was his idol

In conclusion I think it’s really shameful that many people don’t know what he did and even who is he.

  17. To begin with, in the United States there have been various historical events such as racial segregation which began with the importation of slaves in 1618. But also misogyny in the world of work in particular.

To continue with this theme, I am going to introduce you a Hidden figure that I really liked. Her name is Phyllis Wheatly, she was born in 1753 in West Africa and died in 1784 in Boston. She was captured at the age of 7 and sold as a slave to a rich American family. She was the first African-American poet, the first slave and one of the first American women to publish poetry.
But why is Phyllis Wheatly not known today? Is it right that these movers and shakers should be in the shadows?
We will start by talking about how she managed to succeed, then the reasons why she is not known today, then the pros and cons, the similarities with what we are studying (and finally we will conclude).

Firstly, when Phyllis was bought as a slave for Mrs. Wheatly, she took their name. The Wheatley’s two children then taught Phillis English, reading and writing. Despite she was a slave, Phillis learned Latin, Greek, studied the Bible, history and poetry. At 13 she published her first poem in a newspaper. The Wheatleys even gradually relieved her of domestic duties to devote herself to writing.

Phillys was indeed quite famous at the time and George Washington even praised its work. In fact, Phyllis married and then changed her name to "Phyllis Peters" and died at 31. Her husband, John Peters, was in fact being sued for debt and the couple fled Boston. This is perhaps one of the reasons why Phyllis isn’t really known today.

On the one hand, she was known for her skin color and her writing skills but on the other hand, poetry is not a very important cause and she is perhaps more known in the USA. (In any case, I had never heard of her before I did some research.)

We can draw a parallel between Phyllis Wheatly and Paulette Nardal, who are not very well known today. Paulette was the first black woman to study at the Sorbonne and later became a journalist.
It also reminds me of the film Hidden Figures (where three black women were able to impose themselves in the world of work at the time of racial segregation).

Finally, I think Phyllis Wheatly is a strong and courageous woman, indeed it is not easy to stand out and succeed as a colored woman at that time. (Moreover, the Wheatlys were rather open-minded and helped Phyllis to evolve. Phyllis' story is not an easy one, but she fought for it). It is a bit unfair that she is not known today, anyone who has advanced a cause should be recognised. On the other hand, I don't think she will ever be known but it is possible (if we take the example of Josephine Baker).
To conclude, it's a pity she's not known and I hope she won't be in the shadows anymore.

  18. Bessie Colman is the first black female avatar in the world .She was born in Atlanta on January 26 in 1892 and died in 1926 on April 30 In Jacksonville.
Discovering the exploits of the airmen of the First World War in the press, Bessie Coleman decides to become a pilot. Unfortunately, no school In America agrees to train black students. She left for Paris on November 20,1920. It was at the caudron du crotoy flight school that she learned to fly.
She became the first African-American to obtain a pilot’s license from the international Aeronautical Federation .She returned to the United States where she was welcome as a heroine by both blacks and whites, recognized for her piloting skills in her audacity.
On April 30 ,in 1926 in Jacksonville she killed herself during a test flight losing control.
At the first i intend to present to you the pros and the cons of her career the similarities with the character studied in class and what we can assemble from what we have seen.
Bessie Colman wants to open a aviation school for Black people . She also brave segregation by agreeing to perform only in front of mixed audiences. Her accomplishments served as inspiration for an entire generation of African-American men and woman.
Unfortunately her job is dangerous she puts her life and the life of her copilot in danger by not fasting her seat belt, the plane spins , Bessie is ejected the copilot who was unable to regain control of the aircraft also died in the crash.
Bessie Colman could be compared to Marie who persists in realizing her dreams and accomplishing then by being intellingent.
for me Bessie Colman is an adventure in the soul ,she proves that a woman can become whatever she wants ,no matter what skin color or background.

  19. Tarana burke was born on September 12, one thousand nine hundred seventy-three in the Bronx, New York.
She’s an American activist, director of programs at Girls for Gender Equity, particularly known for having launched the Me Too campaign in 2007 to denounce sexual violence, in particular against visible minorities.

but what is tarana burke fighting?

a quote from tarana burke : Get up. Stand up. Stronger. Do something. This quote is taken from an interview of tarana burke

first we will see why she is famous after the pros and cons

then we will compare her with other celebrities

Shes famous because she launched the me too campaign in 2007, this campaign was a huge success so much so that she got the woman of the year award from the silence breakers in 2017, she has written two books, both released the last XD year , I think that although she is recognized at her fair value because the cause for which she fights is important

On the one hand she denounce sexual agression on the minorities
On the other hand she think sexual agressions is about power and money, we conclude that she fights for women in difficulty mainly

she reminds me of rosa parks who also fought for black women
In conclusion i Share her opinion because i think is important to denounce sexual agressions about minorities because i think Its an important and seriously subject. She's an important woman because she managed to get what she deserves.

  20. Today im a going to present you Lewis Howard Latimer, so Lawis Latimer was born on 4th September 1848 in Massachusetts and died on 11th December in 1923 in New York, he was an important inventor in a period where technological discoveries were multiplying. Here we are going to respond to the question: How Lewis Latimer's inventions changed how we live. To respond to this we are going to see, his discoveries and why they are so important, then explain why he is so poorly known, then we are going to finish by introducing to you a person similar to Lewis Latmier who is also unknown by people. thanks to So the reasons why Lewis Latimer changed the world are his inventions, there are 2 inventions that have completely improved our way of life, the first one is the light bulb with carbon filament, it is a big improvement because before there was only the light bulb with paper filament, the one with this on paper filament worked, but the power was quite low, it was pretty big and heavy and it lasted only 30 hours before having to change it, so now with lewis's light bulb, we have powerful light who last thick long: he also invented the parallele electrical systeme, so it is an improvement to because before, when one light broke, all the lights in the house were breaking and with this system, this probleme was solved. And then like that, he directed the installation of all the lights in Piladelfia and in montreal, and his lighting systems are used all around the world now. hars now So even with what he have done, he isn't known by people, even when his hard work changed a lot the world and the way we live, we dont talk about him in the media or even in school in history classes. Maybe because the fame was taken by other engineers like thomas edison who created the paper light bulb. Now some youtubers make videos about him tot talk about his work but he is still unknown by the majority of people.
    2. And it reminds me of an other black man who made a big change but is not recognised either. Im talking about Garrett Morgan, the men who invented the gas mask and saved thousands of soldiers during the first world war. In my opinion it is a shame that all these people who worked so much and provided so much for the world dont got back what they deserved but instead are just forgotten. And i think we should talk about these people and about Lewis Latimer who completly changed the course of technologie and improved our wellness.

  21. Amelia Boynton Robinson is a black American activist, leader of the civil rights movement. She was born 18 août 1911, and she died 26 août 2015 We are going to start talking about her career, what she did. While Amelia was still a little girl, she participated in campaigns for women's suffrage, which was granted by the United States in 1920 to white women. In 1934, Amelia registered on the voting registers, which was particularly complicated for African-Americans at that time. Like many Southern states, Alabama passed a series of laws to prevent black people from voting.

Registration on the electoral lists is thus subject to educational conditions. In 1964, Amelia ran for senatorial elections in Alabama, hoping to encourage black citizens to register and vote. Amelia the first female Democratic candidate in the state. She will receive 10% of the votes The Voting Rights Act, prohibiting racial discrimination in access to the vote, was finally signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in August 1965. Amelia Boynton was guest of honor at the signing ceremony. In 1990, she was awarded the Martin Luther King Medal for Freedom.

She was never well known but played a crucial role in the Marches from Selma to Montgomery demanding the right to vote for African Americans in 1965.

I think she is a very strong woman, during the demonstrations she was hit by police and lost consciousness but despite that she did not give up
it is normal that the right to vote was granted to black women. we are all the same there should be no racial différences.

but the path she took was very dangerous and she had no certainty for the future

we can see that she is as determined as katherine she wants to see things through and prove things.
