  2. England, a very interesting book, talk about the cultural and the touristical aspect of the country.
What can we dicover in this book ?
This book learnt me lots of things about politic, places to visit or meals to taste in this amazing city.

I disovered a lot about the Romans, for example that they first "created" the city of Londinium, (which is today London) making roads and houses.
Furthermore, I also learnt about the Angles and Saxons or the Vikings who came across the North Sea and Southern Denmark.
It was also interesting to learn about the Roman baths, in the south-west of England or about the Royal Pavilion, in Brighton.
I also discovered new beautiful landscapes that I've never saw like the ones of the Lake District or of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Finally, I learnt a lot of things about this incredible place thanks to this book and I found it very intersting and very pleasant.

  3. I have discovered lots of things in this book but I’ll choose some of them …

First , even if I went many times in England , I discovered the city of Birmingham , the England’s biggest city after London which is famous for its symphony orchestra , shopping and arts .
Now , I would go to this wonderful city .
I also discovered National Parks such as The lake district national , in Cumbria . Here are the highest in England , and between them sit sixteen great lakes . This park is the most beautiful in England for me .
Finally , I learnt about Liverpool ( with my presentation ) : its art , sport , food , museums , festivals … it was very interesting !
To conclude , I enjoyed this book and discovered lots of things about England .

  4. This short book written by John Escott leanrt me plenty of things.

To begin, I was totally ignorant of the origin of the name ‘England’ which comes from ‘Angle-land’. Furthermore, I knew that London was made by the Romans but I haven’t heard ever the designation ‘Londinium’.
With reference of the big cities of England, I knew Birmingham as a famous place for shopping but not as the biggest city after London and even less as ‘the workplace of the world’. Then, an other city which has attracted me is Liverpool and its fabulous museums and docks.
Although everyone thinks that in England there are only crowded and noisy places, we can find the most beautiful countrysides in the world which are extremely green because of rain. For example, Yorshire is composed by hundreds of square kilometres of hills and dales, with fast rivers and nice little villages ; the perfect place to have some peace and quite.

To conclude, I recommend this fully interesting book to everybody who wants to know more about England.

  5. Before reading the book, I knew nothing about England .
I've never been there and it make me learnt a lot of things about this country.

I learnt that England was governed by William of Normandy and many people from other countries came to England and stayed to live . That was at the begining.
And now, nearly fifty million different people with different origins live in England .
I was surprised because they were able to live side by side with their differents and several cultures .

The diversity of cultures in England is even more impressive . There are a lot of sporting events , big festivals , many great museums , famous universities and so on .... Even landscapes are beautiful !

Finally, I was very interesting in this book . It explain very well the complexity of England.

  6. I have discovered a lot of things with this book.

First the origin and the history of the name and the country "England".
I discovered some cities or villages like Yorkshire with is beautiful castle, is green dale and lakes or also Cornwall with is old church and is famous St Michael's Mount.
Furthermore I discovered some landscapes like the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads.

In this book I prefered to learn the chapter who talk about festivals in different cities like the " Royal Show" in Kenilworth or the "Boat Race" in London because I think it's an important part of the culture to learn the tradition of a country.

To conclude I enjoyed this book, because I learnt a lot of things about England.

  7. Thanks to that interesting book I learnt so much things about England that I couldn't write them all here !! But which are the main knowledges this book has shared ?

First, the history of the Angle and Saxon who named that wonderful country. I was surprised by the amout of différents people who have lived there like Romans, Vikings, French people, and even, more recently Irish and jewish families, and plenty of others nationalities from all over the world.

Then, I discovered some of the greatest cities in the world. I did know the name those cities but, going further I have been amazed by their features especially Newcastle-upon-tyne, which was the subject of my presentation.

And last but not least, I enjoyed discovering some aspects of the English culture. While I was reading the chapter in "England" about food, I craved to have an Afternoon tea or a fish and chips... I am not really into sport but I admired the diversity and the number of races all year roud. And there is also shopping, the countryside, the English writers, the festivals...

To put it all in a nutshell, "England" taught me how rich that country is, its beauty, its many characteristics.... It made me travel over the Channel for a little while.

  10. The England book tought me many things about the English land. It talks of its history, the creation and the developmentof English culture. But there are subjects wich are very present like clothes and shopping, food and nights out too.

When I was reading the book, the chapter that most affected me was about lanscape. I thought that England weather was rainy and misty. But pictures of beaches , seasides and sometimes towns(in night)are beautiful. But above all it is the skys , lakes ,mountains country side wich made an impression on me.Besides I know now that Cornwalll, in the far south-west is a great spot for surfing, I like this sport very much. I also learn about Stonehenge wich was built between 3000 and 1900 BC.

This book doesn't only give facts about England , it increases your curiosity. After your reading you have discovered many parts of the English culture, then you want to discover more about it. That's why it is a great book.

  11. First, I have to admit that when I think about England, the name of London comes right away to my mind.
However, what I especially appreciated is that, thanks to this book, I happened to learn a lot about all the things to do and to see in England other than London : I was impressed to read that Birmingham is England's biggest city after London. I would like to attend its symphony orchestra concert.
Moreover, I wish I could go to Liverpool to visit the Beatles story exhibition, I'm fond of their music !
Futhermore, I learnt a lot about the historic part of England : I didn't know that the Romans first created the city of Londinium and that London took its name from the Angles, a Germanic tribe who settled there during the fifth and sixth centuries.
Finally, I discovered that, on top of big cities, we can find a wonderful countryside and great national parks located in the Lake District and Cornwall for example.

To conclude, I have to say that I really enjoyed reading this book because I learnt so many important things about this country. In my opinion, everybody who starts to learn English should read it.

  12. England written by John Escott is a kind of guide which allows to learn lots of things about England.

As far as I'm concerned, I've learnt plenty of things about the most beautiful regions in England like the Lake District or Stonehege !

Furthermore, I didn't know that the origin of the name "England" came from  "Angle-Land", the name given by the Angle and the Saxon, come from Europe in the fifth and sixth century.

Next, I was delighted to read the passage which talks about the life of Jane Austen, the author of Pride and Prejudice.

Moreover, even if I knew that England was a country with a special culture, I was ignorant of the big festivals which are organized like The Grand National, or the Notting Hill Carnival.

To finish with, in my opinion, the most interesting and fascinating part of the book is the history of England… Indeed, I discovered the birth of England and his development to reach the level which one she's today.

As a conclusion, England is a very interesting book which teaches everyone, the development of England, his culture, and his beautiful landscapes.

  14. -Jet lag
Sometimes it is not enough to leave far to be "tired"! Indeed, there is 1 hour more in France, throughout the year.

    -The climate
No, it does not rain every day in England! It is an old prejudice. England enjoys a mild and moist oceanic climate with a rare bright sunshine. However, in spring, the weather is mild, certainly cool, but dry. And then, in case of rain or rain, relativise, tell yourself that beautiful plants need water.

    -Money
The currency used in England is the British Pound (GBP, £). On a daily basis, we will talk more about "Pounds".

    -Electricity
The English electrical system is 240 V, so different from ours. The plugs are bigger and all have fuses. Most are equipped with switches. You will therefore need an adapter (3-pole plug) that you can buy in all good DIY stores before you leave.

Little info: English plugs are very often equipped with a switch! So before going to your "host mum" or "host dad" to tell him that the plug does not work, check that the switch is on "On"

    - Driving by car
You probably know already: the English are rolling on the left. This will make you feel a little faint when you take your first roundabout (but, but ... but it's taking it upside down!) But you'll see that you get used to it very quickly.
Pedestrians, do not forget to look left and then right before crossing.

    -The telephone and Internet

Tip: in England, telephone numbers are given digit by digit and the zero is pronounced as the letter "o".

In France, you like to spend hours talking to your friends, sending SMS or MMS ... I reassure you, it will also be possible in England! Yes, yes, I am your saver!
Simply unlock or "unlock" your device and buy a local prepaid SIM card from one of the many English operators. At home, it's called a "Pay as you go SIM".
Tested and approved by young people who have gone to the Au Pair
But communication is now also via the Internet. So if you want to see the boils of your parents from time to time and listen to their valuable advice on, among other things, the usefulness of the umbrella in England (yes, in France sometimes they annoy you but in England they go You will be missing!), You will be able to count on the WIFI networks for the "Skyper". Whether you are staying in a host family, hostel or bed & breakfast, you will have a WIFI connection. She is not beautiful the "English life" ???

    -Food and food

Let it be said, in England one eats not less well than in France, one eats just differently! And it is also for this cultural difference that you have chosen to leave!
We, French lovers of good food, tend to disparage unjustly our Anglo-Saxon neighbors. So yes, I grant you, 30 years ago, we did not often enjoy ecstatic taste with an English dish! But that was before ! The emergence of chefs such as Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver made it possible to change the cuisine on the other side of the Channel. The British colonial past is at the origin of the introduction of many spices in the diet.
The rhythm of the meals can however surprise you. The English take a good breakfast between 7am and 7.30am. They almost never take a break for lunch and just swallow a sandwich (cheddar, my favorite!) With a few crisps around 1 or 1:30 pm. On the other hand, the tea time of 5 pm is an institution and is very often copious. It replaces the evening meal in some families who only have a snack around 10pm. For the less conventional families, the evening meal will be taken around 18h.
If you want to eat quickly and for no lunch, let yourself be tempted by the famous "Fish & Chips". It will be served in a sheet of newspaper: It is little dietetic but so good!

You are now very well informed about the habits and customs of our neighbors. Keep in mind that British phlegm and politeness are not legendary. So do not skimp on formulas of politeness. Do not be surprised to see queues everywhere: the English are queuing for everything, even to take the bus.
